COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS

Assalamualaikum guys. I'm taking a short break from my sabbatical as I am being overwhelmed by a sudden urge to blog.. :p

This morning whilst driving the kids to school, many things caught my attention and my deep thoughts escalated from one thing to another. I saw many of the kampung kids were either walking to school or catching a bus in the wee morning. And I thought : How lucky my kids are! They are being driven in a comfortable car to and fro each day without having to undergo all the hassle of waiting and later cramped up in a hot-humid bus full of other kids who by then are emitting unbearable odors. As we move along the narrow meandering road behind my house, we passed by several dilapidated wooden houses. I cringed with all guiltiness at the thought of the great comfort I draw from my brick house with all its modern amenities as compared to these shabby dwellings which probably still employ old-fashioned toilets . Then, just as I was overcoming the guilt of being lucky and overpreviledged, I passed by an old man, whom I noticed would walk unfailingly, every morning taking the same route. So what's with him, you asked. Well, you see, he has an abnormal gait which in medical term we describe as a broad-based gait. People inflicted with cerebellar disease, has this kind of gait. Imagine waddling treacherously slow, all the way with that kind of movement! By then, I was feeling so lucky that I can still walk upright without any impedances in my movement whatsoever! Alhamdulillah!

How many times in a day do we count our blessings? That we are still alive and healthy, able to enjoy all the pleasures in life. That we are given all the opportunities by Allah swt to better ourselves. That we have our family to cherish and their company to enjoy? And not forgetting the sheer joy of having friends in the blogging world!

I've always reminded my kids to never envy the lavishness and extravagances of the fortunate and lucky few but to empathise sincerely on the depravity experienced by many. Imagine yourself stopping at a traffic light. On your right there's a new classy 5 series BMW. You ogle at it and dream of owning it one day. Green with envy, you eye painfully at those basking in the car. The chic lady driver, adorning sporty shades looking all so cool. Or the chiselled-face-model-look guy beside her. Both emanating a certain kind of persona that befits the luxuriousity of the German made car. Shamefully, you ignore the people on your left who are in an old battered, paint-peeling-off car with malfunctioned air-con. Or the guy on the motorbike sweating under the scorching sun. Or worst still, the people standing in a sardine-packed bus, rushing to work! If we keep on reminding ourselves on the existence of these underpreviledged people, then, the great exhilarating feeling of contentment would fill our hearts. No, I'm not asking you to gloat but to be content with what pleasure we have. Don't go questioning why we aren't enjoying the comforts of a luxurious car but be grateful that at least you are much better off in your 'moderate' though not the 'ultimate' machine!

Another good, very apt and timely analogy (as there are many camera-crazy people around) would be on the issue of owning a camera. When Allah swt has given you the pleasure to create commendable pictures with your Sony Cybershot, don't harbor any grudge towards more professional looking pictures taken by say, a Nikon D50. And those in possession of a Nikon D50, be content with what you have, as a D70 would just be a waste of money!! Why, I have seen excellent candid shots taken with MUPA! So it's not so much of the camera but more importantly, the 'brain' behind the camera. And I'm sure imaging-sensor experts like Izhal can vouch this. Remember! To indulge moderately in a hobby is 'harus' but to splurge extravagantly is 'haram'! Then again, many 'loyar buruk' and 'auta' minds will argue like a pro lawyer on the exact definition of being extravagant and on where to draw the line. Oh well, you can never win with these people!

This entry is especially for my children to ponder on the little 'extras' they get in life, to be constantly grateful to Allah swt. Be conscious that what ever gained and possessed in this world, are all temporary loans bestowed by Allah swt. Take what is necessary and give away to the needy what is superfluous. (That reminds me of our long overdued community service for the kampung folks here)

p.s. Recieved a wedding invitation from Mastura (a pretty Mas stewardess), my cousin's daughter who is getting married to a pilot. May you have a blessed happy marriage, filled with Allah swt's guidance. Ameen!

Alhamdulilahi rabbil'alamin.

Today is such a beautiful day. And I am comfortably indoors at my office, and there is peace and quiet all round.

Please make dua for my friend in ICU with liver and kidney problems after delivering twin boys on Monday. The babies are fine alhamdulillah. Her family are very worried. I am too, for reasons that you know too. (Jangan khabo ke mok kawe).

Alhamdulillah for what Allah has blessed us. Yesterday during my trip to Kuantan, I saw two kids holding their blind father or grandfather into a restaurant. I pray to Allah for them to lead a better life, InsyaAllah.

i would like to touch about the wedding. we have i wedding invitation next week and i ha gone to 1 akad nikah last night. it was akad nikah of my second cousin. in contrast of what DITH had written, it was a grand akan nikah. my cousin happened to be somebody 'important' and the preparation for the reception was grand. it was setup really beautiful. (tak ambil gambar sangat sebab segan.... ramai yang hadir kita kenal dan merupakan VIP.... so, just the camera attached to my body). ;)

Dear all,

It's nice to hear that we are all counting our blessings. There are many in the world that are not satisfied with what they have. It is okay to want something, but if it leads to feelings of hasad then it is a bad thing.

For example, me and some people I know have always been competitive, so much so that nobody wants to be on the losing side. Realising that this is not really that healthy (if we are racing for good things takpalah - ini sampai siapa kahwin dulu, siapa dapat anak dulu etc.etc.) I stopped a long time ago and have started only to challenge myself - eg have I done things better, have I accomplished more today, have I made an impact today. Sadly there are some that feels that they need to compete, to the point of killing themselves.

I have adviced many times not to do this foolish thing, but ego sometimes get the better of them. If someone gets a good result in school, instead of congratulations, the words that come out of the mouth is - "oh if I had taken the exams during this time I would have got 15As)" MasyaAllah. Ada ka patut. Memang every day tak pernah bersyukur, despite living a comfortable life.

Nobody has it easy not even the rich - their trials are different from the poor but are no less profound. With the vast amount of wealth that they have they also hold a much larger responsibility to use the wealth for Allah. They are accountable for every single cent.

People in places of authority, well what can I say... i do not envy them the burden. It is not easy unless that person is not really dispensing his or her responsibility properly. i had a taste of this last month when my boss went on leave and asked me to step in. If i thought the work was easy I was quickly disabused of the notion.

So be grateful for what we have. If we are given something extra, know that it is a test for us to see if we are ready to accept the mantle of responsibility.

Regards

OK- salam! Nice to see another clan member leaving comments. Yes, how exasperating it is to have people around us and peers living their life like in a competition! What the heck? I know my big kids are experiencing it too nowadays amongst friends but to face the same dillema when working, that's bad and truly sad.

AJ- teramatlah betulnya kata2 dari seorang bekas bilal Masjid Panching, :p. Saya terhidu gossip baru tentang awak. Maria Arshad??? :p

Semoga Allah selamatkan Ikelah.

Alhamdulillah, this serves as a very good reminder to me. I realize that at some points in life, I get greedy and want more, but I forget to look back and see that there're people who lack even the basic necessities.. I hope Allah will keep my heart and my mind in check with this..

Speaking of cameras, handphones and the likes.. well, for one thing.. I'm never that picky when it comes to these things. Just as long as I have one that can function well, user-friendly and easy to repair/service, I'll be content with it. Some of my peers call me old-fashioned because I think that a handphone is adequate for calling in/out and SMSing, and not for video-conferencing, and all those things you see on promotion on the TV right now. Well, old-fashioned it is but I'm content with the way it is.

Izhal- Your pics tu semua, you buat touch up tak?

Boogey- nampak nya 'badi lotong' berpindah tangan kpd awak setelah awak terperanjat beruk membaca pendapat saya tentang halal-haram pembaziran membeli kamera digital yg mahal2 tak masuk dek akal! Sesungguhnya Allah swt telah menyelamatkan iKelah dgn menemu jodohkan kami berdua. Kalau tidak agaknya habis duit gaji bulan2 ditabur kepada syarikat kamera yg sentiasa mengaut keuntungan dgn tak putus2 merekacipta 'mainan2' baru untuk org2 yg kemaruk hendak mengambil gambar makro, mikro, landscape dan segala macam blak-blum!

Ayumi- Telephones have come a long way from G. Bell eh! If he was still alive, I bet he would patent his rights and restrict its usage to prevent abuse!

Ada yang touch up ada yang idak... yang buruk semacam color dia tu biasanya saya tak touch up la... jikalau nak diprint lawa di kedai, kenalah print atas gambar size kecil sebab hanya 1.3megapixel je... ni kalo ada rezeki nak beli yang 3.2MP or 4MP punya phone KALAU harga dia zero yen... kalau tidak bye bye jelah... heheh...

Ouch, terkena rasa with your article, especially re: the camera bit. Sbb I AM currently using a Sony Cybershot and wanting a Nikon D50. LOL, coincidence?

your article is spot on.

ps - but i also agree with what ikelah writes above (about different cameras have different qualities).

I'm a bit behind with this post. My dear hubby has asked me to read it. Wow, a great one! My belated thank you.

I'm amazed at how some people could write and touch so many people. But when it was me, it would sound so much like nagging.

Lack of xp, kot.

For me, the gadgets to be ogled at and dreamed of would be those sleek powerful laptops. I am always calculating how much I could save to buy a new one ;) But I know if I do so, it wouldn't be just on mere whims. Rather it's because of the necessities that I have to fulfill as an IT student.

I have no idea about phones though, as long as I can make calls and receive/send messages, I'd be happy :)

Indeed, we have much to be thankful for. This laptop of mine is just a prawn compared to those in the Vaio glass cases, but it's also the one that has done my projects, assignments and everything else all this while.

dith said...

Izhal- one stupid question: why do you prefer camera phones to the conventional cameras?

Mynn-:))definitely coincidence but maybe Allah swt is telling you something here? :p Mama Sarah must be nodding her head with agreement!

Mama Sarah- but to my kids, it is still nagging no matter what!

Yut- dah hilang, maka menjadi satu alasan untuk membeli yg baru yg lebih canggih?

Crimson- Insyallah nanti dah kerja, dapatlah beli those in the Vaio glass cases...:P

Anjang rase lar, dapat suami molek, hensem, kacak bergaya dengan baju lenge pendek tu pun kena bersyukor jugok lar. Apa sangat lar kalo takat ada minat usong kamera kulu kilir tu. Dia amik gambor pun molek molek, gambor budok, gambor cicok, gambor pokok, gambor ike kering, gambor sendiri, buke gambor tok senonoh pun. Orang laing tu usung menda jauh lagi teruk, tebiat lagi buruk, dia ni satu mende je lar dari dulu lagi kemaruk dia. Kamera jek. OK lar, dua menda, Kamera denge komik. OK lar 3 menda, kamera, komik denge guli. Tu je lar kemaruknya. Beli kamera pun buke hari hari buke tiap bule tiap tahun pun. Lagi pun ni bidang seni. Orang alim zaman dulu tak de kamera, jadi dia tulih hat, dia tulis sair, dia lukis corak bunga, corak bersegi segi ikut minat seni masing masing lar. Orang alim sekarang ni kurang dah bidang seni gini sebab dok sibuk berfekoh jek, dah tak berapa bertasawuf sangat dah, tu pasal lar kurang seni bila buek apa apa. Jadi boleh jugok lar bersyukor dengan menda gini. Nok sempurna sanget pun karang bosan pulok tak de mende nak dibebelkan. Bagus sangat karang, kita pulok nampok macam kurang padan pulok. Jadi rasa Anjang lar molek sangat dah tu Tuhan padankan.
