Was It Fair??

Somebody is going to wake up this morning feeling on top of this world. He must think that he is still in a dream and will have to ask his family to pinch him, in fact they have to pinch hard, vary hard! His facial muscles must be in a state of fixed spasm as he can't erase the exhilarated ear-to-ear grin on his face. All the endorphines in his system must be gushing through, so much, making him so light and giddy, he could float anytime! Is this really happening he must be questioning himself repeatedly? No? Yes?

This pint-size wanabe singer was announced as the latest singing sensation, in a very much similar brouhaha as a recent reality singing competition in another TV station. The hype is so identical culiminating to an eeriness. An outblown phenomenon which has resulted from a competition fully controlled by the power of a recent discovered technology, the SMS (short-messaging-system).

The 3 judges whom in actual reality has no power to judge or choose, only retained the sole power to comment on the singing prowess, showmanship and dressing sense of the competitors. And even that, I truly believe that their comments have not an iota of influence on the SMS voting. Definitely not for THIS final.

Between the two finalists, the runner-up was the obvious winner, hands down. She sang and performed all the three songs with much vocal strength and really brought the house down that night. She performed the specially composed single much, much better than the winner who had major pitching problem towards the end of the song.

But alas, it's all about the SMS votes. It's not about singing in tune. It's all about being cute and having special appeals. In this case, the winner is said to have a star-attraction amongst young chinese girls who must have spent millions altogether on the SMS votes!

So was it fair? Definitely not to the runner-up or the people who had voted for her! The winner, eventhough he won, will have to live with the guilt of having done injustice to her, indirectly. He would have faired much better if he was voted second; as he could still make albums and pull the crowds and not having to face the unhappy/unsatisfied public for the rest of his life!

Don't get me wrong. I am never a fan of any singing competition especially one that employs such substandard and unfair judging system. And I have never followed any of the reality shows except this particular one as I find it does not culminate into 'obsessivenes' unlike the rest.

As they say the actual winner is the proprietor of all these reality shows. We the public are the actual losers! I support Najib's statement about checking on these shows, 100%. We've got to do something before it gets out of hands or has it already???

For sure it's not fair. Maybe they wanted to emulate AF3, or maybe it's following American Idol 2 when a guy won. Who knows? Lets hope that Nita will cut an album and then we will see who can sing and sell more. They should have made it 60% judges, 40% sms. Vote by sms could also lead to racism, you vote to help your bangsa instead of talent. Mintak jauh la perkara ni kan?

Fairness is relative. Its fair to the ecstatic fans who cast countless number of sms votes to support their idol. Its fair for those who work hard and compete smart. It seems unfair to a better talent that ends up loosing.

But, the winner of Malaysian idol is not determined by the best singer. The winner is the one who is 'charismatic' enough to woo crowd to love and support him.
A good example, war is not won solely by the best weapon but need excellent tactics too.

As Sun Tze said, use your best to maximize your advantage and exploit your opponent's weakness. Know the battlefield or the system well.

The winner not only sang but make gestures and threw words that melt the audience's heart. He understand the 'battlefield' and act accordingly.
Thus, the smarter guy wins.

I know it hurts many, but we have to accept reality even though we hate it.

Come to think of it, ikelah has got a point there - a real valid point!! We all saw that coming, didnt we? A number of very good, talented singers were eliminated much, much earlier. The Judges were dissapointed and the viewers were shocked. You just have to read the papers to know that the feeling was unanimous, that something was just not right with this sms voting. Much as I was not too surprised with the outcome, deep down I was still wishing and hoping that Malaysians would have some sense in the end, in FINALLY deciding who they want as their idol to represent them in the Asian or World Idol.

But now, we're all stuck with this cute, pint-sized singer who still hasnt gotten over his pitching problem (despite being cute, popular and all)

Sorry Daniel, you're cute, but you're just NOT my idol!!

Oh!! reality sucks !!!

P/S: I've resolved NOT to watch the next Malaysian Idol if they chose to continue with the same format of voting and deciding on the winner. This is insanity...!!!

Quite a few blogs are taking up this subject, it seems. Hmmm, popularity wins at the end of the day, or rather, who most appealed to the (voting, sms-mad) masses. The younger ones, maybe. The older fans, I think, were less likely to bother sms-ing away. And the above comment about judges & sms votes both having weight is really worth considering. I hope these reality shows can be more, uhhh, real.

That is the reality of life, expect the unexpected......

You know what? I like Danial. He is soooo cute. Who cares that he can' t sing to save his life...
Oh Hey ..I think the majority of the voters were women or rather SYT ( sweet young things)
Don' t you just love the way SYTs think???Just imagine them choosing a spouse.....Oh help I have 2 more SYT who have yet to choose spouses!!

Assalamualaikum Doc,
Firdaus Ariff here, great to see you have such a nice blog. So far you are the only parent of my friend who have a blog. :D

totally agree with ikelah. talent comes second to charisma. and also remember, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. while some of us may think the runner-up is more talented, there's a larger group of people who thinks the current winner is more talented. its in the eyes of the beholder, or ears, whatever.

its the same case with AF. but look at it this way, its not the decision of the judges who matters but votes from the people who actually will become the buyers of the singer's album.

so, quite fair, eh? democracy at work.

Jannah- probably our nation is still immature to vote via sms, unlike the Americans. Our nation is so divided in this sense that it'll definitely lead to voting of race and not talent.

iKelah- you have a point there. I guess this pint-size wannabe singer must have read Sun Tze's Art of War, page to page and applied the knowledge in this contest eh?

pycno- the ever diplomatic blogger :))

queenofthehouse- yes, the 60-40 ratio judging would be better.

inositol- I like your one-liner comments, hehe

nurelhuda- didnt know you have time for this show, despite your busy schedule.:). My SYT who is in form 2 now, ogles at even good-looking models on the billboards! Masyallah! And her elder sisters have to remind her, jaga mata, jaga mata!

ibnuariff- waalaikum salam Firdhaus. Heard your nasyid cd :P

p5- what if they call this winner for the world idol. Can u imagine him singing alongside the rest??

Anonymous said...

This winner's idol is Anuar Zain and can you picture the difference between the two??? They each stand at two different ends of a scale!!! If he is to sing in the world idol? I can't even begin to imagine...........

There'll always be the perception that people vote by racial lines. Though there are such folks, I don't think they are the majority. In Daniel's case, I don't think it's the racial factor, it's the SYT factor. I voted for Nita and am dismayed that Daniel won.

Suriya said...

I saw the last bit of the results , my seminar ended at 11 luckily I am an owl although I droop in the afternoons...
I did not see Nita sing so could not compare.I frankly prefer Daniels's sweetness to Nita's worldly sophistication..heard her sing once or twice. My SYT comes home every weekend from Matrikulasi Londang which is 15 mins away from Clinic and she likes to watch Malaysia Idol.

Ikelah said...

The question is... why the viewers were not satisfied by the Malaysian idol results, whereas in Akademi Fantasia(AF) the situation is similar and yet they did not challenge the outcome. Mawi himself is an average singer maybe at par with daniel, cuteee, sweeeet, youngggg, (mohon maaf bebanyak kepada peminat mawi world)but with pitching problem.

The answer for the worry is that
AF is local production whereas malaysian idol is a franchise with a chance to represent malaysia to asian or world idol. the viewers are worried of the standard bearing malaysian name which might tarnish our music industry.

Lastly, as roslan had said, let us see whether there will be 1.2 million albums sold when the album is out.

So, let us wait.

Inositol- Yes, the main concern is what happens if World Idol is on after all??

Lydia- I have to agree with you. After all almost all SYTs own a mobile and the power of sms voting is in their hands. Btw, read your article in InTech. Fellow bloggers need not think long to decipher the palindrome Aidil Het, heheh

Nurelhuda- Lucky you to have your daughter doing Matriculation 15 min away!

Ikleah- I have to agree with you too. Hmm it seems I'm in an agreeing mood tonite, :)

dith said...

Hiyoshi- it shows you have been a good, good, medical student

Lydia Teh said...

Dr, bloggers are a bunch of smart fellas, manage to sniff their way to my blog.

Anonymous said...

I doubt that the term "good medical student" would fit me. I think "medical student who's too lazy to get his bum over to the common room to watch television - not that his hostel has one anyway" would suit me better.

Queen Of The House said...

aaahhhhh ... if one SYT sent in 10 votes, that could only mean one thing. We're looking a round 120,000 album sales ??????
