EYES WIDE OPEN

If you're wondering why I'm entering this post at this ridiculous hour, it's because I can't sleep. Why can't I sleep?. Probably it's the tea plus the pseudoepinephrine which I took for my blocked nose just now. Probably it's because my friend from US just called and we had a conversation that pointed out that I might be doing a lot of bida'ah in my daily practice. Probably I'm thinking about you-know-who.

I just contracted this flu from my daughter who is beginning to get better. So when I was driving to work tonight at 8pm, I was praying for it to be a quiet night. It was raining softly. That's a good sign. The patients were trickling slowly and when it was 9.15pm,everything was quiet and I thought I could go home on time. At 9.25 I packed my bag, switched off the PC, aircon and headed for the front door when the assistant told me "doctor ada emergency, luka besar di dagu". Oh no! Back in. Entered the ER.

"Darah lagi ke atau dah berhenti?" I asked the assistant. ' Ada sikit-sikit lagi". I examined the child and applied pressure to the laceration wound hoping the bleeding would cease and I could just administer the Glustich and send her home pronto. Oh God please make it stop I prayed. But the wound was too deep and the blood still oozing albeit very minimally. To stitch or not? Hmm finally..my patience got the better of me. So I said, "jahit, jahit!'

'Keluar dressing set, draw lignocaine, ambil nylon 5.0" I demanded fast. So I began suturing her up. 'Kena jahit rapat-rapat sebab di muka dan ni budak perempuan , nanti tak lawa, kesian dia, kalau lelaki tak pe la, :)" I said to the assistant half-joking (about the lelaki part i.e.), explaining, meaning we might get off a bit late. Anyway I've seen kids with scars looking like a fish-bone fossils, smacked right across the face! Poor kids having to grow up looking like a pirate wanabe! 'Ok siap' I told the poor kid. 'Lain kali jangan main lompat-lompat atas katil malam-malam hari!"

Anyway, I managed to settle fast and rushed home, hoping to pray Isya' and Terawikh in time and sleep early. But after Isya' prayers, I got the phone-call and here I am, stuck, eyes wide open! *sigh*

"Probably you're thinking of you-know-who" is probably the probable answer. Dengar tu ikelah, sayang dan teringat, sampai tak lena tidur....
So, it's bidaah again, eh? What is it, or what are they, this time around?? I can still remember kenakelayan's entry on how she "tak kuasa nak layan" her friends who keep listing the bidaah things she has been practising.
I hope you'll get better soon. Bila doktor sakit, susah lah pesakit....Take care...

i budak perempuan , nanti tak lawa, kesian dia, kalau lelaki tak pe la, :) --> hahahaha... :P Know what, I wanna be a doctor just like you ;)

Could be also the fasting that is making you sleepless! Hmm scars on the dagu..many people have that..Mine is on the forehead..fell and split the skin on the forehead..

4-5 years ago, kalau org kata ini bidaah, itu bidaah...I sanggup debate tapi sekarang dah tahu tak boleh argue2 ttng Islam sangat, I dah malas nak layan lagi.

Dr Rosa- terimakasih kerana sudi ke sini. Kapan mahu ke Kuantan? :)

Pycno-aik!? Cakap macam dari pengalaman je! Banyak sngt lah cerita bab bida'ah tak tertulis..controversial..

Nurelhuda- I can imagine, a person of your character must have had a robust childhood, so no wonder if you have some scars for rememberance! :))

Halela- you mcm iKelah, my hubby when I put up the many queries I had. His reply was 'bab bidaah ni I dah dengar dari Universiti lagi. Memang tak akan habis.Malas nak layan'. So end of story, no discussion ....

:) alhamdulillah for peoplelike ikelah who are there helping where it is needed.. may he gain Allah's pleasure and help many people who are in need and his task be made easy (also easy to find clean toilets!) amiin. Am speaking from experience sebab ada mains pipe burst and dah 2 hari air keluar intermittently... nasib baik sempat mandi pagi tadi! Now half squatting kat hospital for toilet needs...

Re:bid'ah... hasanah or dhalalah? I am now still kuasa to layan, will firmly but gently state my opinion but will refuse to argue. Hehehe. I would worry more about my aqidah and my state with Allah rather than worry about little bid'ah things that probably are not as important...

WAllahu'alam.

Nurelhuda- Thanks a lot for your prayers. Much needed.

Kenakelayan- Amin! Btw, what a coincidence, Mama pon semalam the whole day without water. Late in the evening she was rushing to prepare food as water just appeared. Luckily I came with the laksa! Hopefully she loves it. Poor thing was alone, papa gi kebun.

As I said before I can't wait to see you in Nov to discuss re: bidaah. This is no more bidaah hasanah nor dhalalah but bidaah perse. According to this school, all bidaah are haram. Fullstop. Wallahualam.

Re the Bidaah mongers...
It has been around in Malaysia for a long time and the chief emotion they cause amongst Muslims is FEAR.
You begin to wonder if Islam is about being a Khalifah Allah or about following a narrow band of rules.I am not going to name them because they will say , no we are not ....., we are the TRUE believes..and they will not hesitate to label those who do not follow them as kafir. Their ustazes go around giving ceramah to rich and middle class middle aged ladies who are just thinking about needing to brush up on their religion and suddenly these ladies go around telling everyone that they re all bad Muslims.
My SIL is an Azhar student, final year..and he has conveyed to me a lot about their activities...many of them would have got their training in Medina ...It may interest you to know Abu Ameenah that you mentioned trained in Medina.

These *pendakwah* are very well funded .
BTW they say tahlil is bidaah.
Pak Lah had a tahlil for his wife, Pak Lah is a graduate of Islamic studies , speaks reads and writes Arabic , his dad was a pengasas of a Religious school..go figure...

dith said...

Yes I know that they are all trained in Medina. Their school of thought stemmed from there. Yes Bilal Philips studied there.

Tahlil is one of the many things. You'll be amazed if I list the things here. Things we do daily throughout our life!

My stand: I listen and analyze. I won't object downrightly lest I would strain a friendship.

iKelah said: Ni lah kita org Islam, sibuk dok bincang hal furu', masalah yang lebih besar kita abaikan.

The problem: they say all these bidaah practices we do involves aqidah, meaning if we don't stop, it will erode our aqidah! Nauzubillah!

Once I was told that it is bidaad to sambut Maulidur Rasul, even baca2 doa selamat, tahlil & all - semua bidaah. Kalau macam tu, satu Msia dok practise bidaah!

My eldest had a deep cut on the chin when she was 5 or 6. Lari-lari tersepak septic tank and next thing I knew, blood all over. She screamed bloody murder while the dr stitched her up, but it is hardly noticeable now. One of my boys had a cut over the eyebrow, still can see the scar - but a boy, tak apalah, tanda macho!

dith said...

My daughter iFos has a scar in the left eyebrow if not mistaken. Shows how nakal she was back then :).

For all wounds on face it's best to use the finest suture material e.g. Nylon 5.0. And the closer the sutures the better. And not to take deep bites far from the edge. But of course that'll take time and the effect will be close to plastic surgery! And time means money too!

Poor Mama.. thanks for the food delivery. Papa must be with his kambings again. BTW, we got water back at 2 am. :) Alhamdulillah.

Hubby has scar on left eyebrow too, some accident involving a pair of scissors I believe (heee seramnya.) I wonder why a lot of scarring occur near eyebrows?

:) ngeh ngeh. True believers? Their sanad goes back a couple hundred years to Muhammad Abdul Wahab, who was the advisor of the (then) Saud clan, and basically resurrected the writings of a (mostly, although as all humans do he does have his good points) discredited scholar named Ibnu Taimiyyah (may Allah forgive him) whom his contemporaries found guilty of anthropormism, which incidentally, IS a question of aqidah. Compare this to the sanad of the 4 mazhabs which goes back to the time of the sahabah/tabi'in, and hence back to Rasul SAW. Imam Malik, founder of the Maliki mazhab, was the son of the sahaba Anas bin Malik (RA). The other 3 mujtahid Imams were either contemporaries or students of one another. And what I find most telling is Imams Bukhari and Muslim, despite being hadith masters (hafiz, meaning memorising more than 100,000 hadith with their sanad, and they also memorised the Quran) belonged to the Shafi'i school of thought. Ibn Majah, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud etc who did the other Hadith collections, all made taqleed of a school of thought, just like we do. These learned people did not renounce their mazhab nor said they will derive their rulings straight from Quran and Sunnah. I wonder how these modern-day laymen have the audacity to do what these great men dared not. :)

To legislate the haram and halal is the right of Allah alone. The scope of the halal is far, far wider than the haram. The source of our rulings are: Quran, Sunnah, and Ijma' (consensus of scholars). And a qualified scholar who makes ijtihad which is right, gains 2 rewards, 1 for his efforts, and 1 for his right conclusions. The qualified scholar who arrives at the less correct position, gains 1 reward. The Unqualified scholar/non-scholar who makes ijtihad??? Their fate is too scary to be contemplated, may Allah protect us from such arrogance, amiin.

I'd be interested to know those bid'ah things as well. :) I do agree with iKelah and nurelhuda, though. But yes, I too know a lot of people of the same minhaj, and there are times I say something if I think it will actually get listened to, but if not (or if I lose my temper) I just stay quiet. This sort of thing needs a lot of tact.

Thanks for the detailed response. Really appreciated it. Hmm....ini mesti takut tak sempat nak jumper Nov ni..pre-empt siang2..tulis panjang lebar :)) Maklumlah masa untuk Cik Abang lagi :)

*big grin* just food for thought and discussion. Felt inspired to write as last nite had a temperature and couldn't sleep, so spent the night discussing stuff with my housemate.

As well as keeping poor hubby company, a friend from UK will also stay with us inshaAllah during the last half of my stay, although by then we will be mostly in Ganu/KL. But inshaAllah will try to see you. When is iKelah coming back? Mesti sejuk kat Pakistan tu, I feel really sorry for the earthquake victims.

Whoopes, found this online: a commentary on the hadith 'every innovation (bid'ah) is misguidance'.

http://www.abc.se/~m9783/n/bida_e.html#RT

The piece was written by Sh Yusuf al-Rifa'i, a Shafi'i scholar and was originally in his book Adilla ahl-Sunna wal Jama'a (Proofs of the Sunni Community).

WAllahu'alam.

I agree with you that it is best not to argue with the hardcore ones. What I feel is that those who are influenced are of a particular mindset and difficult to change..needs more spiritual intelligence to go against status quo.The only way to counter is not to argue with them but to teach people to think and to have compassion and to understand God's mercy far exceeds God's wrath and stop people from having a mindset based on fear.
The siratal mustaqeem is a straight path , not a narrow path..could be a 10 lane superhighway or even bigger!

dith said...

Kenakelayan, Crimson, Nurelhuda-
Thanks for the good comments. After reading all your comments my small mind whispered 'what if they are really the ones coming up with an innovation? They are coming up with something as though making everything look so rigid and difficult!' Wallahualam. May Allah swt guide us always!

Anonymous said...

DrRoza: Amiin!

Nurelhuda: I couldn't agree more. :) After all we are all alive by His mercy, and by His mercy we hope to enter Jannah... amiin. I really enjoy the diversity of our ummah. The point is that we all become muslims on the straight path, not become clones/assimilated (like Borgs in Star Trek!)
